By Peter Grear

By most polls the North Carolina race for the United States Senate is a dead heat.  That being the case, victory in November will go to the political party that executes the best voter mobilization plan.

Suppress Voting, Impeach Obama and Close HBCUs

Written by Peter Grear on Thursday, 14 August 2014 22:58.

Educate, organize and mobilize: Over the last year I’ve been co-leading the Campaign to Defeat Voter Suppression.  Our campaign has sought to educate our communities to the point that they would organize and mobilize for a massive voter turnout for the November General Election and beyond. With less than 90 days before the election I wonder if our well intended efforts to promote voter participation have been in vain.  This week I’m going to touch on three strategic issues that I hope will help to illuminate the dangers facing Black Communities in hopes that the sense of urgency that some of us feel will move all of us to action.  Of course our standing focus issue is voter suppression and on that issue I must report that on Friday, August 8, a Federal Judge ruled that the provisions of the GOP enacted Voter Suppression Act of 2013 (VSA) would be allowed for the November General Election.

Tight North Carolina Race Could Determine Control of U.S. Senate

Written by Afrique I. Kilimanjaro, Special from The Carolina Peacemaker on Monday, 11 August 2014 16:05.

RALEIGH, N.C. (NNPA) – U.S. Senator Kay Hagan has been reaching out to communities and constituents across North Carolina galvanizing support for her re-election campaign. The Democratic Senator from North Carolina and her campaign are full steam ahead as they face Republican opponent, current N.C. Speaker of the House, Thom Tillis. The Tillis campaign, according to Hagan, is being aided by $20 million in out of state advertising spending from conservatives such as Charles and David Koch, and Republican political strategist Karl Rove. The Hagan campaign says, these out of state entities “believe North Carolina’s Senate seats can be bought.”

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Returns $4.6 Billion to Consumers in 4 years

Written by Charlene Crowell on Monday, 11 August 2014 16:03.

(NNPA) – In recent days, many policymakers and analysts have noted the July 21 anniversary of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). It  marked the anniversary of President Obama signing the historic Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act into law. The cornerstone of the law’s reform was the creation of a new bureau dedicated solely to ensuring that when it came to financial services, consumers would have a cop-on-the-beat, fighting for and ensuring transparency and fairness.
