Born the poor, black son of a single parent, Hill grew up in a matriarchal home environment and was raised by his mother and grandmother. In "Grace, Guts and Glory in America," he writes that "simply surviving life, in retrospect, feels like a major achievement ... The 50's and 60's in Gary, Indiana was a smorgasbord of crime, racism, poverty, transition and opportunity -- depending on who you were."
Written in songlike prose, Hill provides spiritual, professional and personal insight into life through his own story and his continual service to others. The first of his siblings to attend college, Hill received his double-major Bachelor's degree in Advertising Design and Art Education from Indiana State University in 1973. He went on to work for over 30 years in human resources and diversity management at Fortune 100 companies and recently retired from a prestigious position at Johnson & Johnson.
Hill's personal psalms are inspired by his faith, family and friends and especially by the "women of God" -- his mother, grandmother, sister and aunts, all of whom he calls "songstresses" -- that provided the spiritual sheet music for him to follow on his personal life journey. In "Grace, Guts and Glory in America," Hill hopes to provide future generations with inspiration and insight through his own life songs.
