Reverend Curtis E. Gatewood is Associate Minister of Pennsylvania Avenue Missionary Baptist Church of Oxford (Anson County), North Carolina. He serves as the State 2nd Vice President of the NAACP.
His ministry objective is to spiritually, professionally, and/or psychologically “reach” those perceived as “unreachable.” He works to act in accord with God’s purpose in his daily life, in his Ministry and in his community involvement. His ministry delivers to the poor and oppressed and is built upon a direct response to Community needs, social justice for all humans and living in accord with God’s purpose. He is currently the 2nd Vice President of the North Carolina NAACP. His active involvement with the organization included serving previously as the Chair of the Economic Committee and Branch Leader in Durham. Many marched to the State Legislature for the 4th Annual HKonJ (Historic Thousands on Jones Street) March “to protest the re-segregation of public schools, call for education instead of imprisonment, and demand good jobs and schools.” He was appointed by the Governor to serve on the NC Taskforce to prevent church burning.
Reverend Gatewood believes encouraging all people to learn the electoral process and vote is a proactive ongoing process in his work. A good example can be found with the One Nation Working Together March. Reverend Gatewood served as a NC Peer Director to empower North Carolina Central students and attend the One Nation Working Together March on 10/2/2010 “for jobs, justice and education for all.”

Students were required to be registered voters, write essays on their personal reasons for attending the March and discuss how they plan to bring change upon their return.
His introduction to the Ministry and Social Justice roots came from his family in Wadesboro, North Carolina. His Father, Reverend Dr. Wade Gatewood of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and his brothers’ leadership roles in the NAACP Youth Council. Reverend Gatewood was in 5th Grade during the time a peaceful school walkout was held for a local school. It shaped him profoundly when he received his Calling from Luke 4:18-19 in January 1992.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised , To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. (Luke 4:18-19).
He has an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Bachelor’s Degree of Arts/Science (Business Administration) and Theology. He is currently enrolled to obtain a Master of Arts in Christian Counseling.
Additional Civic activities include serving as President and Chair of the Economic Committee of the Durham NAACP Branch, Executive Officer of S.O.L.O. (Save Our Little Ones), STOP (Secure the Obama Presidency), Organizer and Facilitator EEE (Establishment of Economic Equality), Out of the Darkness, Into the Light, Spectacular Magazine Columnist, 1,000 Men Against Violence and Self-Hatred, American Red Cross and Hurricane Relief Volunteer, Granville County Friends of Youth, Kittrell Job Corps Community Relations Council, Southern Poverty Wall of Tolerance, Montgomery, Alabama and City of Durham Proclamation Honor, Curtis E. Gatewood Day.
