"The workshop was inter-active, energetic and motivational," says Darren Stewart, president of the Men of Excellence Program at Gaston College. "Our three presenters were outstanding. They surprised our group with an interesting way of forcing you to think outside the box, embrace new ideas, and concepts. They convinced us to expand our awareness and appreciation of diversity and showed us how to better promote a climate that celebrates differences," commented Stewart.
Since 1996, Ms. McClain has worked in a variety of positions in higher education as instructor, multicultural affairs, student development, student activities, residence life and recruitment.
She continues to work with both community colleges and universities with many retention task force initiatives and interracial/interethnic relations. She holds both an undergraduate, BA in sociology and an MLA degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education in Teacher Leadership.
Mr. Moses has been in the healthcare field over 15 years. He has been a Certified Cyto-Technologist for 10 years combining his science background with ministry to raise awareness about cancer.
Mr. Davis is the supervisor of the Charlotte and Black Mountain Regional Offices within the Field Services Unit at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Communicable Disease Branch. He oversees the morbidity of HIV/AIDS and syphilis of 21 counties. He has served on various boards and committees. Davis received his BA in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and his MBA/HCM at the University of Phoenix.
The Gaston College Men of Excellence Program is supported by student leaders Darren Stewart, MOE president and Kenneth Gilliard, MOE student liaison and Student Government Association president, Dr. Everett Torrence, MOE Faculty advisor and Instructor for Business Economics at Gaston College, Tanisha Williams, MOE Staff advisor and counselor for Persistence and Retention at Gaston College, and Ernie Charles, Coordinator, Student Activities and MOE Program at Gaston College. Mr. Charles also serves on the MMM state advisory board appointed by the NCCC Systems Office. The MOE program is funded by a state grant through the Minority Male Mentoring Program.

The Men of Excellence Program at Gaston College sponsored a workshop on "Men's Awareness: Health and Diversity" on Friday, February 18 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Myers Center Auditorium, Gaston College, Dallas Campus. (L to R) Presenters Gerard Moses, an ASCP Certified Cyto-Technologist, Katrina McClain, Educational/Motivational Speaker, WITS2DAY, and A. Bernard Davis, a Public Health Control Supervisor focused their talks on leadership and diversity, mental health issues and sexually transmitted diseases.
Twenty students and advisors from five Male Minority Mentoring Programs in the Western Region of the NC Community College System attended the workshop sponsored by Gaston College. The colleges represented were Catawba Valley Community College, Cleveland Community College, Isothermal Community College, South Piedmont Community College and Gaston College.
