DURHAM, N.C. — For the third year in a row, North Carolina Central University has been recognized as a “military-friendly” institution by Victory Media, a company that serves military personnel transitioning into civilian life. The 2013 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are “doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus,” Victory Media said.
“Inclusion on the 2013 list shows NCCU’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, vice president at Victory Media. A company website, www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, offers the list and interactive tools designed to help military students find the schools that best meet their needs and preferences. The 1,739 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.
“We’re glad to be recognized as a military-friendly institution,” NCCU Chancellor Charles Becton said. “We appreciate the service to the country provided by our service members and their families, and the sacrifices they have made. We’ll continue to work hard to ensure their success.”
Now in its fourth year, the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 Veterans Administration-approved schools nationwide. A full story and detailed list of 2013 Military Friendly Schools will be highlighted in the annual “G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools,” distributed in print and digital format to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October.
Founded in 1910, North Carolina Central University was the first publicly supported liberal arts college for African-Americans.
