With the GOP nominee almost a certainty, the two-man race is about to begin. President Obama is about to hit the campaign trail, now that his presumed GOP opponent has virtually been named – all that is left is the convention in Florida, making Mitt Romney the official nominee. This coming Saturday, the President and First Lady Michelle Obama will kick of his campaign for a second term by holding two public rallies in Columbus, Ohio, and Richmond, Virginia. There he is expected to speak about his accomplishments thus far and to spell out in detail the very real stakes in this election.

Unconscious Racial Attitudes Playing Large Role in 2012 Presidential Vote

After the 2008 election of President Barack Obama, many proclaimed that the country had entered a post-racial era in which race was no longer an issue. However, a new large-scale study shows that racial attitudes have already played a substantial role in 2012, during the Republican primaries. They may play an even larger role in this year's presidential election. The study, led by psychologists at the University of Washington, shows that between January and April 2012 eligible voters who favored whites over blacks – either consciously or unconsciously – also favored Republican candidates relative to Barack Obama.

As I sit at the computer trying to complete my 2011 Federal Tax forms I find myself getting more and more angry. I realize that in order to limit the amount of taxes I owe in the future I will have to increase my withholding amount. As a sixty eight year old retired grandmother, raising two teenage grandchildren, I am outraged. How can it possibly be legal, appropriate, and fair for Hedge fund operators and financial speculators to pay only 15% on their earnings when I must pay a 30% rate on my fixed retirement income? I support myself and my grandchildren on my monthly income and rarely, if ever, have anything left at the end of the month.

WASHINGTON (NNPA) – When she graduated from the University of Iowa two years ago with a major in elementary education, Amber Newman envisioned standing in front of a class of bright, energetic youngsters and providing them with the solid educational base that would help them become successful in the upper grades as well as later in life. But when Newman didn’t land a job in the classroom, she found another way of working with young people – she’s a nanny in Chicago to two boys, ages 1 and 4. Although it’s not her dream job, she’s glad to have a job in this struggling economy. Any job.

‘Black Broadway,’ The Howard Theatre Returns

During the segregation era when Washington D.C.’s U Street corridor was known as “the Black Broadway,” the Howard Theatre was its crown jewel. After a $29 million renovation, the 102-year-old People’s Theatre is starting to lift its show curtains once again. Hopes are high among Black entertainers and entrepreneurs as the historic Howard re-opens with a rebuilt stage, a state-of-the-art sound system, walnut paneling, oak floors and new seating. The reopening of the Howard harkens back to a time when Blacks were big in the entertainment business. At its 1910 opening, the Howard Theatre was billed as “the largest colored theatre in the world.” It was the first major theater built to feature Black entertainers performing for a predominantly Black clientele.

In the aftermath of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, Congress enacted the federal Fair Housing Act on April 11, 1968. This historic federal act made it illegal to discriminate in housing and housing related-activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, disability or sex. Further, the law applies to marketing and sales of homes, listings, appraisals and maintenance. Now 44 years later – and not for the first time –two of the nation’s largest banks - Wells Fargo and US Bank are accused of serious violations.
