Home-School Program For Students in Grades 1 – 4 SEPTEMBER 11 Tuesdays\, 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Cost: $4 per session Pre-registrati on is required. Home-School students in grades 1 – 4 are invited to jo in us for a monthly home-school program on the second Tuesday of each mont h. Each 90-minute program includes a guided tour of the Museum’s Permane nt Collection or special exhibition and a hands-on activity.

The USO\, in p artnership with Hire Heroes USA\, hosts transition workshops for wounded\, ill and injured service members\, their spouses\, and caregivers. The wor kshops focus on resume writing\, mock interviews\, professional work pract ices and translating prior military experience into a civilian career. As a follow up to the workshops the USO\, in partnership with Hire Heroes USA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce\, host Career Opportunity Days for wound ed\, ill and injured troops\, spouses and caregivers. These non-traditiona l career fair type events match employers with participants in advance bas ed on interest and background. Employers are asked to provide position des criptions of available jobs along with geographic location of each to aid in better matching of candidates to employers. Employers conduct mock inte rviews and provide interviewing skills and feedback. Career Opportunity Da ys are limited to 10-15 employers and 50-75 wounded\, ill and injured tran sitioning troops and veterans\, as well as their spouses and caregivers to ensure the size and magnitude of these events provides an environment con ducive to one-on-one interaction and networking. In 2011\, six Career Oppo rtunity Days were held with nearly 300 attendees. This year\, the USO will host 22 workshops and 14 Career Opportunity Days.

WHO

No more than 15 employers with active employment opportunities and up to 40-70 wounded \, ill\, or injured\, service members making the transition to a civilian career\, as well as their spouses\, and caregivers. To attend participants must have previously completed either a Hire Heroes USA transition worksh op or another employment preparation program. All attendees will be prepar ed with resumes.

WHAT

Career Opportunity Days are high-touch\, non-traditional career fairs. Emp loyers are provided resumes in advance for those that have pre-registered\ , and they are connected for one-on-one “mock” interviews with service members\, spouses and caregivers based on their backgrounds as well as th e geographic locations each service member plans to live after medical ret irement.

This interaction also gives the employe r a unique opportunity to get to know the prospective candidates. We match attendees with employers based on their military specialty\, previous exp erience\, and geographic interest for relocation. Employers are given inte rviewees resumes in advance\, except for in cases when troops do not pre-r egister.

The non-profit National Private D uty Association (NPDA) will host its Annual Leadership Conference in Orlan do\, Sept. 12-14\, 2012. The theme for the event\, held at the Hilton in t he Walt Disney Resort\, is Transitions in Care – The Time is Now. This y ear’s event will mark the organization’s 10th Anniversary.

Attendees will participate in sessions on topics suc h as successfully running a competitive private duty business\, addressing key clinical issues\, taking advantage of advances in technology\, hiring and keeping the best employees\, increasing profits through quality care and today’s legal and regulatory issues.

That's just my short def inition. We will read together Kabat-Zinn's segment from the book\, I'll s hare a few stories and then we can open the discussion. What do you think of non-judging? Through his choices of mixed media\, Nkurunziza uses vibrant colors and an abstract impressionist style to explore 'Mother Rwanda\,'?the country as both place and parent. His experience with blending colors and shading cre ates a sense of movement while capturing symbolic moments from what he obs erves on his journey as an artist. He states\, 'The dynamic rhythm of natu re\, people\, colors and texture within my world are the basis from which my art is derived.'

Nkurunziza actively spreads his love of art and his vision of the national identity to others in his work with projec ts like Ivuka Arts where budding artists can find mentors and impoverished children can find\, as the collective's website says\, 'hope and educatio nal opportunities.' With pieces titled 'Fellowship' and 'Equality\,' the w orks of Innocent Nkurunziza embody ideas rather than just images\, ideas t hat UNC Wilmington is carrying into the classroom with several class visit s by the artist. The communal nature of his art expands as it is placed in tandem with the work of local student artists.

Sunny 104.5  is holding its Fourth Annual Caring for kids at NHRMC Radiothon on September 26th and 27th.  W e will once again be broadcasting live from the lobby of the Betty H. Came ron Women’s and Children’s Hospital to tell the story of the county ow ned hospitals impact on quality of life.   The proceeds from this year� �s Radiothon\, are earmarked to buy the new Pediatric Gastroenterologist e quipment to help in the diagnosis of reflux problems in young children. 

Betty H Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital is pleased to welcome Dr. Chip Williams\, now practicing as the only pediatric gastr oenterologist in New Hanover county.

In an effort to garner ea rly support\, Sunny 104.5 will be holding a series of Yummies for Tummies events leading up to the Radiothon.  Area eateries will be hosting the Su nny 104.5 staff\, one a week leading up to the Radiothon\, to give their c ustomers a chance to donate early.

Canoe Quick Trip (1.5 hours)
This leisurely 3-mile float through the tree- lined banks of this peaceful river allows any paddler the opportunity to e njoy the scenic beauty of the Raleigh Canoe Trail.   See turtles\, water fowl\, shorebirds\, turkeys\, deer and the occasional raccoon as you float under the canopy of beautiful pines and hardwoods. The trip lasts approxi mately 1.5 hours and is recommended for small groups\, families\, couples\ , or corporate events.
The Canoe Quick Trip begins at the Canoe Laun ch directly across the street from our shop off of Falls of Neuse Road and ends at our private take out on Capital Blvd.
*Paddle Creek cannot a ccommodate for children that require a booster seat or car seat to ride in a vehicle.  Please call the store for details. We do not allow Flip-flop s\, only watershoes or sandles with straps.

A Celebration of African-American and Caribbean Arts. Select ed as one of the Southeast Tourism Society's Top 20 events last autumn\, ( for the third consecutive year)\, the 2011 MOJA Arts Festival promises an exciting line-up of events with a rich variety of traditional favorites. N early half of MOJA's events are admission-free and the remainder are offer ed at very modest ticket prices\, ranging from $5 - $20.

The M OJA Arts Festival is a multi-disciplinary festival produced and directed b y the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs in partnership with th e MOJA Planning Committee\, a community arts and cultural group and the MO JA Advisory Board\, a group of civic leaders who assist with fund raising and advocacy. MOJA\, a Swahili word meaning 'One\,' is the appropriate nam e for this festival celebration of harmony amongst all people in our commu nity. The Festival highlights the many African-American and Caribbean cont ributions to western and world cultures. MOJA's wide range of events inclu de visual arts\, classical music\, dance\, gospel concert\, jazz concert\, poetry\, R&B concert\, storytelling\, theatre\, children's activities\, t raditional crafts\, ethnic food\, and much\, much more.

In add ition to its myriad arts presentations\, MOJA also includes an active and busy educational outreach component of workshops in the public schools.
