THE 12TH ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING CIVIL RIGHTS HERITAGE TOUR (All Day)

For the twelth consecutive year the Asheville, Charlotte, Durham and Raleigh MLK Committees in collaboration with The North Carolina Martin Luther King Resource Center, are pleased to sponsor a bus trip to Atlanta, Georgia; Selma, Tuskegee, Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama; and to Memphis, Tennessee to retrace the steps of Dr. King and other civil rights heroes. The award-winning excursion will visit historical monuments and museums in the bedrock areas of "The Movement's" epic center.

This area of the country was the setting for many history making achievements by African Americans and courageous, morally principled white citizens. The whole purpose of the tour reinforces that more of us should better understand, appreciate and acknowledge how all of this relates to the present and future.

During the trip, we will visit the birth home of Dr. King and walk along historic "Sweet Auburn Avenue" in Atlanta and the Martin Luther King Center where his tomb rests. We will relive the experience of the bravery of the people who endured "Bloody Sunday", then made the harrowing Selma to Montgomery March for voting rights. We will be better able to understand the inspiring words of Dr. King who led the March as well as get to know the unsung heroes, ordinary men and women who risked their lives to register Blacks to vote. We will relive Rosa Park's nonviolent protest in Montgomery that inspired the movement that helped open equal access to public facilities. We will also spend time in Birmingham and in Memphis we will visit the Internationally acclaimed National Civil Rights Museum and Lorraine Hotel where Dr. King was slain.

Many historians have acknowledged that the work and sacrifices of Dr. King and other pioneers of the Civil Rights Movement helped pave the way for the election of America's first African American President. Museums in Montgomery, Birmingham and Memphis are adding new attractions which will highlight and educate citizens with timelines and events which helped change the trajectory of multiracial attitudes and voting patterns nationwide.

Below you will find the list of attractions we will visit, the day-by-day itinerary and recommended tour tips

This historic trip is scheduled for April 3 - April 6, 2012

Mineral City Heritage Festival (All Day)

Our mountain heritage lingers from generation to generation. The Mineral City Heritage Festival in October of each year in downtown Spruce Pine thrives on sharing the old traditional mountain traits. Folks can watch an old-fashioned train engine chugging and making apple cider, watch the pot boil with apples peeled, and the making of apple butter. Weaving on an old spinning wheel can be viewed in a window or the caning of a chair being done by hand. Many varieties of food are available to feast upon as you listen to the “picking and singing.” Games abound for children, which gives the down home family feel to Spruce Pine. Take a drive off the Blue Ridge Parkway by about five miles and venture into a vision of excitement from the days of old. October 13th, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

AT&T North Carolina has announced that it will unveil the 2013 edition of “The Heritage Calendar: Celebrating the NC African-American Experience” at an inaugural gala on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, located at 2 E. South St. The Heritage Calendar is a celebration of 12 men and women of all races who have contributed significantly to the lives and experiences of African-Americans in North Carolina. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be attended by the honorees and their families. The gala, an exclusive red carpet event, will celebrate the invaluable role each honoree has made in weaving the rich tapestry that is North Carolina’s diverse history, and will promote the individual stories and lives of all honorees to inspire the state’s future generation of leaders. The evening will include a VIP welcome reception for the honorees and their families, two live performances from local schools and universities, a special calendar signing, and meet and greet with the honorees for all attendees directly following the event. Gerald Owen, anchor and reporter from WRAL, will serve as the event’s emcee. All attendees will receive a free copy of the calendar. They also partnered with the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to develop lesson plans and other interactive materials based on the historical contributions of each honoree to be implemented in elementary, middle and high school 2013 curricula statewide. All materials will be used to spur student interest and understanding of the impact and history of North Carolina’s African-American community.

An Evening With David Sedaris The Best-Selling Author, Humorist And Contributor To This American Life Live At DPAC (8:00 PM - 11:00 PM)

David Sedaris, author of the previous bestsellers Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and regular National Public Radio contributor will be appearing for one night only at the Durham Performing Arts Center on Friday, October 26 at 8:00pm.

Celebrating the release of his new title, Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary, a book of acerbic, outrageously funny fables, featuring animals with unmistakably human failings, which hit bookstores September 2010, author David Sedaris will visit Durham for an evening of engaging recollections and featuring all-new readings.

Tweaking the familiar until it warps; David Sedaris mines poignant comedy from his peculiar childhood in North Carolina, his bizarre career path, and his move with his lover to France. Including his last release, the New York Times #1 Bestselling book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, David Sedaris’ wickedly witty observations of the ordinary-bizarre is always sure to deliver insights and laughs. One of six children in a second-generation Greek family, he grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1977, he dropped out of Kent State University to hitchhike around the country. Aside from working as an elf, Sedaris has worked a number of charmingly quirky jobs such as a house painter, an apple picker, an aide in a mental hospital, a creative writing teacher at the Art Institute of Chicago, and an apartment cleaner.

Sedaris made his comic debut recounting his strange-but-true experiences of being a Macy’s elf, reading his “Santaland Diaries” on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition in 1992. His sardonic humor and incisive social critique have made him one of NPR’s most popular and humorous commentators. In 2001, he was named Humorist of the Year by Time magazine and received the Thurber Prize for American Humor.

Tickets go on sale to the public beginning Friday, June 15 at 10am. Ticket prices range from $40-$55 and are available in person at DPAC Ticket Center and all Ticketmaster Outlets, by phone at 919-680-2787 and 800-745-3000, or online at DPACnc.com or Ticketmaster.com.

Kevin Hart - Let Me Explain (8:00 PM - 11:00 PM)

On the heels of his starring role in the hit movie “Think Like A Man,” actor and comedian Kevin Hart announces he will extend his “Let Me Explain” tour which moves from sold-out theaters to arena dates this fall. Hart has performed for more than 334,000 fans during the 2011 and 2012 theater run of “Let Me Explain.”

Kevin starred in the Screen Gems film “Think Like A Man,” a comedy based on Steve Harvey's bestselling book “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man” from 2009. The movie was number one at the box office for two consecutive weeks. Hart also had a supporting role in Universal & Nick Stoller’s comedy “Five Year Engagement” by producer Judd Apatow.

Kevin Hart burst onto the scene as one of the most versatile comedy actors in film and television. In September 2011 Hart released “Laugh At My Pain,” the feature film version of his comedy tour (under the same name). The movie grossed over $7 million, and was 2011’s most successful film of those released in less than 300 theaters. The “LAMP” tour made Hart 2011’s number one comedian on Ticketmaster, and in February 2011 Hart sold out the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles for two nights in a row to break the previous box office record by an African American comedian set by Eddie Murphy. The “LAMP” DVD hit double platinum in February 2012, after being on sale for one month.

Hart’s DVD “Seriously...Funny” is one of the fastest selling DVDs in recent years and has gone triple Platinum. His Comedy Central special of the same name is the highest rated comedy special of 2010.

In 2009, Hart’s one-hour comedy special “I’m a Grown Little Man” on Comedy Central was also one of the highest rated specials for the network.
