Gospel And Blues Legend Mavis Staples To Perform At UNCW (8:00 PM - 11:00 PM)
"Mavis Staples is the most underrated diva of the century. She has an almost superhuman ability to implant the pure power of passion and emotion." – Rolling Stone
Grammy-winning gospel and blues legend Mavis Staples performs at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium. The performance, co-sponsored by the UNCW Office of Cultural Arts and The Penguin - 98.3 fm, is part of the UNCW Masters Series, which brings artists of cultural and historic significance to Wilmington each year.
Staples' remarkable career began in the 1950s when her family's gospel group, The Staples Singers, became a household name with popular hits such as "I'll Take You There" and "Respect Yourself." Since that time, Staples has maintained her gospel roots while blazing new trails – taking her from the epicenter of the civil rights movement and collaborations with artists such as Bob Dylan, The Band and Prince to her 2011 Grammy-winning album You Are Not Alone, produced by Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy.
“Mavis is the walking embodiment of undaunted spirit and courage,” says Tweedy. “She’s an ever-forward looking, positive example for all human beings. And she sounds like she’s in the prime of her life.”
One of the greatest voices of our time, Staples’ many contributions to the American musical landscape have been recognized by the NAACP, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, National Endowment for the Arts and artists and critics from across the music spectrum.
Tickets are $25-35 (reserved seating). More information is available at the Kenan Auditorium Box Office, M-F, noon-6 p.m., 910.962.3500 or 800.732.3643 and at www.uncw.edu/arts.

Program: 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Wrestling With Ethical Dilemmas - We Have Met the Enemy...
About The Program This live, interactive seminar developed by Charlotte’s own ReelTime CLE provides an engaging and entertaining forum for consideration of some of the common ethical and professional dilemmas faced by lawyers, and the corresponding toll they can take on an attorney’s mental health and well-being. Built around a series of film clips from the critically acclaimed 2011 film Win Win, starring Paul Giamatti as a struggling attorney and high school wrestling coach, this program explores the intersection of ethical decision-making and the various sources of stress that lawyers regularly encounter. Participants will leave this program better equipped to identify and understand the various pressures they commonly face in their practices, and with practical guidance for avoiding the kinds of professional and personal missteps that can literally ruin a career.
The mix of guided discussions and instructional time is led by Chris Osborn, JD, an Assistant Professor at the Charlotte School of Law, Michael Kahn, JD, LPC, professional counselor/former lawyer, and Lawyers Mutual Claims Attorneys Mark Scruggs, and Warren Savage. ReelTime CLE has presented its seminars in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and New Mexico.
Additional Terms Lawyers Mutual will confirm insured status.
Manuscripts We will not provide printed materials at the seminar. The manuscript will be available on September 7, 2012 for download on our website www.lawyersmutualnc.com. LOVE INDEED The Relationship Summit (11:00 AM - 2:00 PM)
Theme: Has Your Relationship Gone Hollywood?
Do you keep up with the Kardashians?
Perhaps you relate to the Real Housewives?
Do you spend more time thinking about their lives than your own?
So where's the LOVE on these shows? In my opinion we find people fighting, hating, yelling and disagreeing often times because the LOVE is lost. And why is the LOVE lost? Because someone is trying to play another person's role to be more valued. But we should be careful NOT to take our cues from Hollywood when we encounter problems with friends, siblings, spouses, co-workers or parents. Everyone should be valued because everyone has a respective "role" to play.
And though this is NOT Hollywood...
...I dare you to jump into the role of "Director" and yell, CUT!!!
"I will respond differently!"
What makes relationships look more and more like Hollywood, is all that stuff (noise) going on behind the scene. But the only way to shut the noise out is to learn how to respond to our relational issues in a positive loving manner. It’s time to get serious about our relationships folks.
My personal opinion is that the BIGGEST fuel to our drama filled world is a word we love to use called HATE.
"But HATE has one deadly weapon, LOVE."
I’d like to invite you to come and learn how LOVE helps you win the battle of hatered, regret, un-forgiveness, loneliness, anger and many other negative emotions that we experience within relationships.
