 rtist\, filmmaker\, writer\, musician and activist Gordon Parks (November 
 30\, 2012 – March 7\, 2006) by screening this biographical film which ex
 plores Park’s prodigious artistic output. Parks began his career as a Fa
 rm Security Administration (FSA) photographer\, where he created one of hi
 s best known pieces\, American Gothic\, Washington\, D.C. and was the firs
 t African American to work at Life magazine as a photographer. His semi-au
 tobiographical novel\, The Learning Tree became the first Hollywood film d
 irected by an African American (Parks) is included in the Library of Congr
 ess. In1971\, his best-known film\, film Shaft ushered in the Blaxploitati
 on era. Films are held in the Museum’s East Wing Theatre/Classroom and a
 re Free with Membership or Museum Admission.
