November is American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month. Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

Cape Fear Community College along with Children’s Museum of Wilmington and the Battleship North Carolina will host a variety of events during the month of November. Waccamaw-Souian Day will be held on November 3rd at CFCC Tabitha’s Courtyard between 10 am and 3 pm. • On November 6th, Dr. Phil Garwood of CFCC will be a guest on Midday Interview with Jemila Ericson, WHQR 91.3 at 12:30pm highlighting the rich culture of the areas earliest inhabitants. • Join Teddy Draper Jr. the son of one last Navaho Code talkers at Battleship North Carolina auditorium on Veterans Day, Nov. 12th at 7pm. There is a $5.00 donation at the door for the evening’s presentation. • Teddy Draper will also be on hand daily at the Children’s Museum of Wilmington Nov.12-15th at 3 pm for an hour of storytelling for children of all ages. • November 10 and 17th from 10-1pm, CFCC will host an artifact Identification program at the college’s downtown library. The public is invited to bring in artifacts, rocks, and gems for identification. For more information please contact Daniel Sheret. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
