Annual Business Ethics Forum to Focus on Ideals of Benjamin Franklin

Baylor University will host its annual Business Ethics Forum entitled “Benjamin Franklin: Entrepreneurship, Effectiveness, and Ethics” on November 1-4 at the Hankamer School of Business. The forum will concentrate on ethical issues in the workplace today and will feature several distinguished guest speakers.

The forum will begin at 3:00 p.m. November 1 with John Bogle, founder of the Vanguard Group, speaking on “Entrepreneurship and the Public Good.” Guests will later be taken back in time during “An Evening with Benjamin Franklin” at the Mayborn Museum, and interact with Ralph Archbold, the official Ben Franklin for the city of Philadelphia. Ticket prices for the evening with Ben Franklin are $20 ($10 for students) and are available online at http://www.baylor.edu/businessethics.

Reconvening the following morning, the forum will feature Peter Handal, CEO of Dale Carnegie and Associates, speaking on “Self Improvement and the Public Good.” J.A. Leo Lamay from the University of Delaware will discuss “The Franklin Autobiography, American Business Culture and the Public Good,” with respondent Tom Hibbs, at a luncheon to be held in the Barfield Drawing Room.

On the third day of the forum, members of the Better Business Bureau and several executives with major corporations belonging to the Ethics Officer Association will speak in business classes on campus.

The forum will conclude on November 4 with Judy Dean, former Senior Vice President of HealthSouth Corporation speaking at a luncheon. The luncheon is free, but seating is limited and registration is required at http://www.baylor.edu/businessethics. Later in the afternoon, panelists will meet for a Roundtable on Integrity in Financial Reporting to discuss the trials and tribulations of complying with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The panelists will include Lynn Turner, former Chief Accountant of SEC; Charles Niemeier, Public Company Accounting Oversight Board; Mary Ann Cloyd, Partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers; and Bob Simpson, Chairman of the Board and CEO of XTO Energy. Baylor’s Dr. Bill Thomas will serve as moderator.
