Thora Institute Calls For More AIDS Activism, AIDS Education, and HIV Testing Among Blacks
New Haven, CT - A report on AIDS in black America by the Thora Institute finds that the black adult AIDS rate is ten times the white adult AIDS rate. Only among blacks is AIDS one of the top ten leading causes of death. From 1999 to 2003, while the number of new AIDS cases declined slightly among whites, it increased among blacks.
"Black leaders have not done enough to combat the misinformation about AIDS in the black community," says Algernon Austin, the Director of the Thora Institute. "And they have not pushed hard enough to secure adequate funding for AIDS prevention programs."Austin argues that only with more AIDS activism, AIDS education and HIV testing will the black AIDS rate decline.
The Thora Institute's Black Directions report, Why is AIDS Ten Times Worse among Black Americans? makes detailed suggestions for reducing the black AIDS rate and provides references to HIV/AIDS resources.
It shows how black AIDS conspiracy beliefs are hurting blacks, and it has an interview on AIDS treatment and prevention with the assistant director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS at Yale University.
The report can be purchased for $12 by sending a check or money order to Thora Institute LLC, P. O. Box 367, New Haven, CT 06513-0367.
