Hello [Firstname] [Surname],

Talking about affirmative action, get the facts. Thank you for reading this edition of GreaterDiversity.com eNews.

The Slow and Tortured Death of Affirmative Action
Commentary By Glen Ford and Peter Gamble -- “Diversity” as a compelling government interest may indeed have gotten a clean (and, perhaps temporary) bill of health from the High Court. However, affirmative action has been liquidated as public policy of the United States. At least since the 1978 Bakke decision, which struck down strict “quotas” in college admissions, friends and foes of black people have tended to use the terms “affirmative action” and “diversity” interchangeably. One of the terms is now deceased. Let’s think of this article as a wake and, with proper respect for its passing, speak of affirmative action as it was originally intended and understood. High Blood Pressure Among Black Adults Linked to Discrimination and Unfair Treatment
Boston, MA — Experiences of racial discrimination and unfair treatment may be associated with blood pressure and contribute substantially to black/white differences in blood pressure, according to a study of 4,086 black and white women and men. Black professionals who name and challenge racial discrimination appear to be at lower risk of elevated blood pressure than working class black women and men who report having experienced racial discrimination, but not challenging unfair treatment. Talking About Affirmative Action
From The National Organization for Women
Myth: Affirmative Action is “reverse discrimination” — let’s stop giving special rights to certain groups while others are left out.
Fact: Affirmative Action is fair! It levels the playing field so people of color and women have the chance to compete in education and business. It’s all about the numbers. There are more white individuals in the United States, therefore more whites score higher on entrance examinations than other groups. White men hold 95 percent to 97 percent of the high-level corporate jobs. And that’s with affirmative action programs in place. Imagine how low figures would be without affirmative action. Minority Health Professionals Focus of Public
Hearing on Diversity
Atlanta, GA — Diversity in the U.S. medical, dental and nursing workforce will be the focus of a field hearing convened by the Sullivan Commission on Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce, chaired by former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Louis W. Sullivan, M.D. “The scarcity of minorities in the nation’s healthcare workforce is not only an equity issue but a compelling state and national interest. Our ability to eliminate alarming racial and ethnic health disparities in the U.S. depends in part on how we recruit, train and educate the nation’s health professionals,” said Sullivan. [FULL_TEXT]

Girl’s Education Initiative in Western And Central Africa
OUAGADOUGOU/NEW YORK, NY — As a number of countries in Western and Central Africa struggle to achieve their development goals, UNICEF is calling on donors and governments in the region to assign greater weight to the role of education and to invest far more in the education of girls. “Hopes of improving education in this part of Africa have been shattered by a devastating set of social and economic ills, coupled with internal conflicts in several countries,” said Carol Bellamy, UNICEF’s executive director. “As a result, so too are the hopes of any sustainable development. Educating girls is a proven way to revive these hopes.” [FULL_TEXT]
