Today’s prison population is 49 percent black and 18 percent Hispanic. That statistic represents one of the largest migrations in American history: of young urban men, mostly belonging to minorities, to new prisons. Today approximately 1.8 million Americans are behind bars. What drives this headlong rush towards the unimaginable? The Smoking Gun: Measuring Racial Bias

Chicago, IL -- To better understand the role of race in hiring, the LAF conducted matched-pair testing of employment opportunities for blacks in entry-level managerial positions in retail firms in the Chicago suburbs. Their black and white job seekers all had the appropriate qualifications and experience for the positions they sought, and none of them faced any transportation obstacles. Thus, their study made race, and not skills or space, the salient difference between black and white job-seekers. The results suggest that the deck still remains stacked against blacks. [FULL_TEXT]

Black & Hispanic Contractors Unite
Dallas, TX -- For years, Black and Hispanic contract workers have testified of distressing clashes when individually going out to acquire contracts from major public or private construction projects. Both sides have accused prime contractors of pitting minority sub-contractors against each other or having them fight over an extremely small percentage of project dollars. “We’re here to increase both the quality and quantity,” said Trevino. “We’re here to unite to help us create better conditions, not only for our communities but our families.
