Paradox: More Jobs, Yet More Blacks are Unemployed
When the Labor Department reported last week that 308,000 jobs were created in March — the largest monthly gain since April 2000 — many analysts said it was proof that the nation’s employment situation has turned around. But while this jobs growth greatly exceeded the expectations of forecasters, it masked a troubling fact: black unemployment actually rose in the midst of this record increase in new jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
