The Wilmington Housing Authority (WHA) is
the leader in promoting affordable housing opportunities for low and moderate
income families, and is committed to offering quality housing choices
and economic opportunities for the residents of Wilmington.
History
The Wilmington Housing Authority was
established in 1939 and is the oldest housing authority in the state of
North Carolina. Though the oldest housing authority in the state, we are
one of the more progressive.
The Authority is a public housing agency with an
inventory of 1416 conventional public housing units and management agency
for over 1000 Section 8 units. The agency is classified as a corporation
in the State of North Carolina and is not a part of the city, county or
federal government. Operating funds are provided by the U.S. Department
of Housing & Urban Development through rent and utility subsidies
and modernization grants. Rent and utility costs for residents are limited
to 30 percent of income.All residents are currently classified as low or
moderate-income citizens. The only other possible sources of income are
generated through management fees from Section 8 programs and interest
income on investments. Our HUD State Office, one of the best in the nation,
is located in Greensboro, NC.

The Central Office is located at 508 South Front Street in a blue and
white historic house (with black shutters) located adjacent to the eleven
story elderly high rise Solomon Towers.
From Interstate 40 east, take the Hwy 17/Market
Street exit, turn left on Hwy 17/Market Street. Traveling approximately
five miles, you will enter the historic downtown district. Turn left on
Front Street and travel approximately five city blocks. The office will
be on the right.From Hwy 17 north or Hwy 421 east, travel over
the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and take the second exit (Front Street).
Turn right on Front Street and the office will be approximately one city
block on the left.
